A Spanish Flu Story

This Swing Out Seat Table calls back to the cafeteria-style, space-maximizing tables common in early 20th century schools and factories. The Chicago Hardware Foundry Company produced a popular line of “SANIMetal” swing out seat lunch room tables that coincided with the end of the Spanish Flu pandemic, with cast iron legs and a vitrolite glass top with antiseptic properties. The company promoted their SANI line as the modern and sanitary choice, dismissing wooden furniture as “obsolete,” after the public shifted towards a more hygiene-conscious mindset. Ironically, the SANI table tops are rarely found now with the original tables, leaving furniture restorers to outfit them with wooden tops!
