On Cloud Nine

Commercial flying in the 1920s meant sitting in a wicker chair screwed into the floor. Early 20th century flight was risky and uncomfortable, but exciting for the passengers who could afford it.  This airplane seat from the 1940s represents the widespread shift to aluminum and cushioned seating on passenger aircrafts after the Aluminum Company of America created the first light passenger seat in 1930. Airlines worked to make air travel a more luxurious experience in the 1940s, with seating as the first step.
