This Midcentury Modern mint green sofa (1963) from Steelcase, now better known for their office furniture, is upholstered in an artificial leather called Naughahyde made by Uniroyal Engineered Products. Most popular in the 1960s, Naugahyde launched an iconic advertising campaign that jokingly claimed the faux leather was acquired from the “Nauga,” a fictional animal that shed its “hyde” willingly for the upholstery. The lovable Nauga Monster with its happy face and outstretched paws made the artificial material feel familiar to customers. The Nauga’s story spiraled into an urban myth with some of the public, humorously and otherwise, clamoring to save the synthetic creature from mistreatment and exploitation!
